The One Secret to Making Money with your Business

Why did you start your business? For most people the answer is one of the following 3:

  1. I wanted more freedom
  2. I wanted to make more money
  3. I was tired of not being in charge

While those are all valid reasons to start a business, they’re not the single reason that will propel your business to the best it can be. Take a second to go back and read them. Where are they all focused?

They’re all focused on ‘me’. They all start with ‘I’ and are about what I wanted when I started a business.

Focusing on yourself will only get you so far. True you may make lots of money, but you’re still going to be looking for purpose.

If people spent as much time worrying about how to make a difference as they do about how they could make money, then they would soon find themselves rich beyond belief. — Millionaire Messenger

The word difference there is a sticking point for many business owners. They hear it and they think of saving animals or some other thing that feels soft. But that’s not what it means. Zig Ziglar probably said it in a way that more business owners will immediately get:

You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want. — Zig Ziglar

That means when you’re putting together a proposal for a new prospect you’re not thinking about how much you can make on the work, you’re thinking about how much they can make as a result of your work. Every step of the way you’re making sure that they can get to the end result they want and come out far ahead on the transaction.

It means that you identify the biggest core issues that your clients have and you keep digging deeper in to them by providing new ways to solve those problems and help make your clients make more money.

If you’re tired of small projects with poor clients, then start solving bigger problems. Start looking for more value for your clients and help them get to it.

Once you put your focus on someone besides yourself, you’re going to start to see a return in your business. Those clients that you served hugely and helped get to their goals are going to send you new clients. They’re going to appreciate you as a partner and be willing to pay you because you’re the one that helps them achieve what they want.

You’re going to get more than just more clients that are happier and better to work with though. If you can make your job about helping others get where they want to go, you’re going to get personal satisfaction out of it. You’re going to love that you helped someone grow their business so they could spend more time with their kids.

That sense of self-satisfaction is what will keep you going on the days when the job is tough and you want to quit. Without that external motivation, you’re going to quit when things get tough and your business will never achieve all the things you envision for it.
